Structural
Building design

Borrel Engineering, LLC has been providing civil/structural engineering in Louisiana, Arkansas and Oklahoma for over 30 years.  Projects include a $30M renovation of a 14 story boiler building in DeRidder, LA.  Served as the lead engineer and Project Manager on this project.  The project entails the design of replacement steel and concrete members as well as the renovation of existing steel members, storm water drainage and building code upgrades.

A recently completed project includes an $18M recycle paper mill building in Arkansas and a $2M renovation to a conveyor structure in Oklahoma.

Structural
Foundation design

Mr. Borrel has been accepted in District Courts as an expert in Civil and Structural Engineering.

We have 28 years’ experience in designing foundation systems for residential, commercial and floating structures and have inspected and rendered professional opinions on over 3,000 foundations. We provide engineering reports, AKA Engineer's Report,  for realtors, home owners, real estate professionals, contractors and appraisers regarding the structural integrity of a foundation system, i.e., cracked slab, failed foundation or just to check if a foundation system has failed or as an independent check of a foundation repair [contractor's] work relative to best practices in the industry.

We have worked with USDA, VA, FHA, the State of Louisiana and private commercial lenders to ensure all codes such as the International Building Code, International Residential Code, Louisiana Plumbing Code, National Electrical Code and all I-Codes are met.

We have designed parking facilities that serve not only as vehicle parking but also storm water flood water detention, saving the client hundreds of thousands of dollars in construction costs and land acquisition.

We are very familiar with the requirements of ASCE MOP 113 (2009 Ed) for the structural design of Electrical Substations and has performed work for Boise Cascade in DeRidder as well as Beauregard Electric in Merryville, LA.

Structural
Foundation analysis

Borrel Engineering, LLC understands that after a period of time, your foundation may have settled and caused stress cracks in the brick mortar, slabs, flooring or in the sheet rock in the interior of the residence. In rare instances it may have differential (uneven) settlement in the foundation system, which may or may not need repair.

Our staff have the expertise and understanding of foundation structures to ensure that your foundation is still structurally sound and in compliance with all building codes.  Our team of inspectors are thorough in examining your foundation, and when, based on engineering principles, it is believed to have "failed", i.e.., it no longer safely supports the residences or building's superstructure, we will make appropriate recommendation regarding repair.

It is important to note, our recommendation to repair (if found to be necessary) will provide you with the information needed to solicit bids from several contractors, who will be bidding on the same specifications.

Contact us today to learn more about our foundation and/or slab analysis services and how Borrel Engineering can help you insure your home or building remain a safe and code compliant structure.

PostTension Foundation Design

POST-TENSION FOUNDATION SYSTEMS

Borrel Engineering, LLC (BE) has years of experience in the design of Post-tensioned (PT) slab-on-ground foundations.  PT is an alternative ground-supported concrete slab foundation system (as opposed to a traditional Slab-on-grade foundation) that is reinforced by means of flexible steel cables that are tensioned after the concrete reaches a pre-specified compressive strength.

The cables are not normally tensioned until at least 7-days after the concrete placement. Since the “post” or “after” tensioning of the cables is not performed until after a concrete curing period has lapsed, the cables can do nothing to control what is known as restraint-to-shrinkage (RTS) cracks which are visible. These cracks are caused by the differential drying between the surface concrete particles vs the interior of the slab or foundation.

In spite of this, post-tensioning is generally considered to be a superior method of mitigating foundation distress or failure compared to conventional concrete reinforcement.

Let BE help you determine the most cost effective approach to your particular building or structure foundation.

Structural
Design of Helipads

Borrel Engineering, LLC performed a study different solutions
to be able to land the UH-60A Blackhawk helicopter.
This aircraft is currently used as an air-ambulance to bring patients to the
hospital from a near-by army base. Although the hospital has an existing heliport,
this facility was not designed for the Blackhawk helicopter, but rather for a
lighter aircraft. The size of the existing heliport would also need to be
increased, since the Blackhawk helicopter is bigger than the design aircraft it
was built for.

Here’s the different solutions that were studied:
1. I
ncrease the size of the existing heliport to a
minimum of 60ft X 60ft helipad which would be able to accommodate the UH-60A Blackhawk
helicopter.
2. I
ncrease the size of the landing area that is
currently being used, on top of a nearby levee, to receive the helicopter.
3.
Use an adjacent hospital building roof top for landing the aircraft.

The last option was used and the $2.1MM pad is under construction.

Sanitary Sewer Systems

Waste Water Sewer Treatment Plant

Client: City of Marksville, Marksville, LA ($250,000)
The Project generally includes the installation of mixers, baffles, a recirculation pump and associated equipment along with vender services as specified in the Procurement Documents through their individual agreements. The work includes dewatering the East Aeration Basins to install the equipment, process piping, electrical and control systems.

Infrastructure

Bayou Pierite Drainage Improvements

Client: City of Marksville, Marksville, LA
Project Budget $600,000
The proposed improvements will improve surface drainage and create subsurface drainage, thereby significantly reducing the potential of future flooding in the Sunny Avenue and Oak Street area of the City of Marksville.

Bayou Pierite, with its eroded slopes and dense debris, lacks the hydraulic section to handle the required storm flows thereby causing drainage restrictions. Existing culverts at Saucier Street crossing are undersized and are adding to stormwater back-up. Replacement of portions of the open channels with subsurface drainage culverts will improve capacity in the upstream portion of the bayou.

Implementation of this project will allow storm flows to pass with less restriction. Less flow restriction will result in lower water elevation in the bayou and less likelihood of the water exceeding the channel banks. This will directly contribute to reducing the future flooding potential of structures and property in this area. The acquisition, construction, reconstruction, rehabilitation, or installation of public facilities and improvements are eligible activities under Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP) and can be carried out by the City of Marksville.
